- (1868–1936), Russian writer and revolutionary; pseudonym of Aleksei Maksimovich Peshkov. After the Russian Revolution, he was proclaimed the founder of the new, officially sanctioned socialist realism. Notable works: The Lower Depths (1901) and an autobiographical trilogy (1915–23).
