- (1913–2005), US civil rights pioneer; full name Rosa Louise McCauley Parks. On December 1, 1955, she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama, an act that inspired the civil rights movement. After the ensuing boycott and NAACP protest, bus segregation was ruled unconstitutional. Congressional Gold Medal (1999).
