- (1835–1910), US novelist and humorist; pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. After gaining a reputation as a humorist with his early work, he wrote his best-known novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885); both give a vivid evocation of Mississippi frontier life.
